A friend tied you to my front porch and thought you were mine. We pulled you in. I gave you a name. Now, you’re underneath my parents apple tree. Stubborn friend, remember the time you dropped that rabbit at my feet? Stubborn friend, I think about you now and then and all the funny things you said. You made my friends laugh all the time; you even made my father cry.

You’ll be arriving in three days soon. I know it’s inevitable. Missing you to death keeps my penmanship alive ... hoping that you’re alive ... that you’ll survive the plane ride home. Leopard blankets keep us warm always, but tonight it’s different. The thoughts we create are one and the same. If you’re conscious, you’re thinking of me. If you’re sleeping, you’re dreaming of what I sing. Dreaming of our lives ... living our dream. Someday, we will breathe that moisture-less air alone.

It was dark when I woke up. The city lights reflect off the snow in the yard. You can see where the kids left their marks. You treat the world like dirt. Let’s take a trip to the moon ... where we can watch the Earth self-destruct because of you. Doesn’t anybody want to thrive? Doesn’t anybody want to find a place to call home? You can watch your friends grow. Observe the mistakes they make. We’ve got to get out of this town, because the street ... they fill, and the creeks are overflowing, and the hustle and bustle will drive you mad after 30 years of driving in traffic ... as our town becomes a city.
